South major softball advances to states

DANVILLE – South Williamsport’s major softball team is making another trip along the way, this time to the state tournament.

South Williamsport defeated Troy, 16-3, at Danville on Saturday to win the Section 3 championship and earn a berth in the state tournament, which begins Tuesday. South Williamsport will face the Section 4 champion Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Plymouth Meeting, which is just north of Philadelphia.

Abby Lorson led South Williamsport’s offense by going 3 for 3 and Kendall Cardone and Lynna Clark both were 2 for 2. South Williamsport also got hits out of Lily Reidy (1 for 2), Lacey Kriebel (1 for 2) and Chelsey Harrison (1 for 1).

“We just try to put the ball in play hard and put the pressure on the defense,” South Williamsport coach Cory Goodman said. “All of our girls work out starting in January and go all summer and they love it. I got 13 girls that love the game, play as a team and are just starting to come together.”

Troy was led by Addie Smith and Amber James, who both went 1 for 2.

South Williamsport jumped out to a six-run lead after the first inning and added five runs in both the second and third innings.

Alizabeth Schuler was again dominant in the circle, yielding just three hits to Troy as South Williamsport’s offense collected 12.

“Our pitching’s solid. We only threw one pitcher, but we are deep. I have other girls that can throw and do well for us,” Goodman said. “We did have a couple miscues, but obviously it didn’t hurt us and we came out swinging.”

Troy scored two runs in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to 6-2, but South Williamsport scored five in the bottom to take an 11-2 lead into the third. Troy scored another run in the top of the third, but couldn’t cut the deficit any closer than eight runs before South Williamsport scored another five to help end the game in the fourth via the mercy rule.

Many of South Williamsport’s players have experience playing in the state tournament from being in the minor softball division previously with South Williamsport. And that helps the players know what to expect when the state tournament starts Tuesday morning.

“I think every girl on this team has played in a state tournament before in 8-9-10, so they have experience. And they know going in, it’s a completely different ball game,” Goodman said. “Everyone’s going to be good. They’re going to be solid. We just have to keep doing what we’re doing, have good at bats, good approaches at the plate and put the ball in play.”
