Local roundup: Hughesville girls soccer now is 4-1

Kenna Ammar-Khodja, Lauren Henry, Morgan Hopkins and Jadyn McGinley all scored a goal to help Hughesville defeat Line Mountain, 4-1, in girls soccer Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-1. Hopkins added an assist and Cierra Getz assisted on Ammar-Khodja’s goal.

Jena Boyce scored the game-tying goal in the 65th minute and netted the game-winner in the 83rd minute as Wellsboro defeated Williamson, 5-4. Jordyn Abernathy led Wellsboro with two goals and two assists, including on the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime.

Sophie Killbride scored a first-half goal for Lewisburg, but Shamokin added a goal in the second half and overtime to take a 2-1 win. Lauren Gross made nine saves for the Green Dragons.

Abi Duck made nine saves, but Montgomery was shutout against Benton, 7-0. Brynn Hess and Rylan Hartkorn both scored twice for Benton.

Katie Penman scored twice and assisted on a Sarina Beiter goal as Williamsport overcame an early deficit and defeated Selinsgrove, 3-2. Beiter’s goal tied the game in the 23rd minute and Penman scored two second-half goals as the Millionaires went up 3-1.

Warrior Run held Loyalsock to just two shots on goal and Mel Brown scored the game’s only goal as the Defenders won, 1-0. Kylee Brouse earned her second shutout of the season.

Sarah Dgien had nine saves, but Muncy lost to Millville, 3-0.

• In boys soccer, Alan Daniel tallied two scores and an assist as Lewisburg moved to 4-0 with its 5-0 win over Camp Hill. Ben Liscum also scored and had an assist.

Taylor Nelson scored and Jayden Nelson made 14 saves but North Penn-Liberty fell to reigning district champion Athens, 11-1.

South Williamsport lost both games at the Midd-West tournament, losing to Benton, 4-0, and Jersey Shore, 3-2.

The Bulldogs led 3-0 at the half before South Williamsport’s Gabe Harvey and Hayden Swinehart both scored in the second half to cut the deficit down to one goal.

Alex Hazzoum had a goal and assist to help Warrior Run defeat Shamokin, 2-0. J.T. Emmert had the Defenders’ first-half goal.

Sullivan County outlasted Southern Columbia, 2-1, in double overtime with Jalen Thomas scoring in the 97th minute. Thomas opened the game with a goal in the fourth minute. Trace Neary and Colton Ammerman each credited with an assist on each goal. Owen Schweiter totaled seven saves in goal.

Milton scored late in a 2-1 win over Hughesville. Austin Lewis scored the opening goal for the Spartans in the 26th minute, assisted by Nick Trevouledes. Milton’s Brady Scoggins (9:57) and Tyler Hendershot (5:21) each scored in the second half.

• In girls tennis, South Williamsport dropped just three sets the entire match as it defeated Muncy, 5-0. Lauren Peck (No. 2 singles) and Alayna McGovern (No. 3 singles) each picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins.

North Penn-Liberty fell to Towanda, 4-3. Aubrey Griess won for Liberty at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 against Hannah Risch. Kylie Holmes (No. 4 singles) and Daja Weaver (No. 5) also earned victories for Liberty.

Hughesville won a hard-fought match against Danville, 3-2, as it swept the doubles matches. Madison Entz took No. 3 singles before Maria Duff and Marley Green and Molly Forwood and Chylee Stroup won doubles matches.

• Lewisburg and Bucknell Golf Club hosted the 2019 PHAC Golf Invitational. Thirty boys and nine girls representing 11 schools played on Bucknell’s par-70 course Danville’s Caden Mutchler led all golfers with a 6-over par (76). Lewisburg’s Nick Mahoney carded an 81 to tie for second place.

Montoursville’s Cameron Weihermuller shot an 82 and Montoursville’s Peyton Mussina and Lewisburg’s Sean Kelly tied for sixth with 84s.

• In men’s soccer, a shutout from sophomore goalkeeper Zack Donoway and a second-half goal led Lycoming past rival Susquehanna, 1-0, in the 19th annual Battle of the Boot.

The Warriors (1-2 overall) captured their fifth straight Battle of the Boot victory, while winning their fourth in a row by way of a shutout.

The Warriors broke a scoreless-tie in the 67th minute when George Charalabidis sent a header off a pass from Jayson Butler to the lower right 90 of the goal, which caused a diving River Hawk to head the ball into the back of the net in an attempt to knock the shot out of play. The play was officially ruled an own goal.

• In college cross country, Lyndsey Payne placed second overall and Quincy Amabile was third to lead Mansfield at the Husky Invitational.

Payne was edged by less than a second of top finisher Nicole Keeley from East Stroudsburg.

The Mounties placed five runners in the top 25 of the field with four being newcomers to the program.

Milton grad Kaylee Long finished 29th in the women’s 5K and junior Daniel Moses placed 52nd in the men’s first 8K race to highlight the Lycoming College cross country teams at the Dutchmen Invitational.

Long ran a 20:15.40 to place 29th in the field of 93 runners to lead the women to an eighth-place finish out of 19 teams at the meet. Freshmen Tamera Hess, a Canton grad, placed 65th with a time of 25:14.70

Matt Leiby led Penn College runners with a 12th place finish in a field of 96 runners, by crossing the line in 29:08 on the 8K course at SUNY Cobleskill’s Stephen Warde Invitational. Chris Hogan finished in 30:48 to place 27th. Penn College’s Katie Plankenhorn finished 49th on the women’s side. Cinnamon Digan was 57th in 32:07.

• The Lock Haven University women’s volleyball team defeated Salem, 3-0, in straight sets before losing to Minnesota State-Moorhead, 3-0.

Kiannah Titus had 32 kills and 24 digs and Lilly Singleton posted 20 kills and 37 digs to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team on the second day of the Lycoming Invitational, as it split the day 2 doubleheader. The Warriors beat Pitt-Bradford, 3-1, and lost a narrow decision to Elizabethtown, 3-2.

• Penn College fell, 9-0, to Susquehanna in men’s tennis. Tucker Phillippe-Joh fell at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Phillippe-Joh teamed up with Joseph Morrin at No. 1 doubles, but lost, 8-5, to Emil Vyskocil and Conor Ryan.
