Officials warn of dangers of alternative heating sources

The Lycoming County Department of Public Safety is warning county residents using generators or alternative heating sources to be aware of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon Monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel may be sources of carbon monoxide.

Individuals using a generator for heat should put it in an outdoor well-ventilated place away from windows, doors and vent openings. Other items not to be used inside are gas or charcoal grills. Additionally, do not attempt to heat a home with an oven.

If individuals need a warm vehicle to sit in, make sure it is not in a garage or enclosed structure, officials said.
