Local roundup: South minor softball claims section title

South Williamsport’s minor softball team is headed to the state tournament.

South Williamsport earned a 6-3 win over Troy on Thursday in Minersville to win the Section 3 championship.

Alizabeth Schuler, Kendall Pardone and Lynna Clark each had two hits and Natalya Betts had two RBIs.

In the circle, Schuler gave up just three hits in her complete-game win. Troy was led by Addie Smith, who was 2 for 3 with a double and home run.

Troy took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but South Williamsport responded with three quick runs in the bottom to take the lead. Troy would tie the game in the top of the fourth at 3-3, but South Williamsport scored another three runs in the bottom to again go ahead.

South Williamsport also out-hit Troy, 9-3.

South Williamsport opens the state tournament with the Section 6 winner at Christy Matheson Little League Field in Fleetville on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

• In the senior baseball state tournament, Montoursville defeated DuBois, 5-1, to advance and play Hanover today in the state winners’ bracket fianl.

Montoursville’s pitching didn’t allow DuBois to record a hit until the sixth inning.

Montoursville held a brief 2-1 lead over DuBois going into the fifth inning before Montoursville’s offense started to get going, as a deep sacrifice fly by Maddix Dalena helped the Montoursville go ahead by three runsin the fifth inning.

Peyton Mussina went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Keon Burkholder, Mason Sechrist, Nauman Amos, Nate Ewing and Jaxon Dalena all added a hit as well.

• In the 13-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament, West End stayed undefeated in pool play thanks to a 15-5, five-inning win over UDHL to improve to 2-0 in the National Division a day after routing 21st Ward, 17-2.

Griffin Vollman helped lead West End by going 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored and Matthew Kauffman added a double and RBI.

West End had 10 players score a run, eight had hits, eight were walked and seven players had an RBI. West End also only had one player strikeout so far in the state tournament through two games.

Eli Eberhart added a double for West End as well. Joey Signor, Kydreeze Burks, Brian Evans, Adam Aldenderfer also added a hit.

Vollman and Burks combined on the mound to only yield five hits from UDHL as Harold Ivory and Chris Zupido were both 2 for 3.

West End opened the game with a 1-0 lead after the first inning and scored nine runs in the next two.
