Trump Declares Pennsylvania A Federal Disaster Area
President Donald Trump on Monday declared Pennsylvania a federal disaster area, opening up federal funding for the state’s fight against the coronavirus. Trump’s declaration came after Gov. Tom Wolf applied to have Pennsylvania join other states that have declared a disaster. The number of coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania increased by 687 to 4,087 Monday, a single-day increase of slightly more than 20%, health officials said. The state has had 48 deaths due to the virus. It has 26 counties under stay-at-home orders, which have been extended to April 30, and non-life-sustaining businesses statewide have been ordered to keep their physical operations closed. The president’s declaration makes federal funding available to eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, for all areas in the state affected by COVID-19.
