Local roundup: Jersey Shore defeats Milton in girls, boys swimming

Jersey Shore swept Milton in high school swimming. The Bulldogs’ girls team won, 96-51, and the boys won, 69-46.

Taylor Watkins won the 100 breast (1:39.32) and 200 IM (3:32.23) for the Bulldogs. She also helped the 200 free relay team with Meaghan Keegan, Rachel Tira and Abby Wall win. Keegan won the 100 back in 1:21.60.

Xavier Barlet was a two-time individual winner for Jersey Shore as he won both the 200 IM and 100 back.

Milton’s Maria Painter, Riley Godown and Kayli Johnson won in the 200 medley relay with Haylee Carl and the 400 free relay with Sara Dewyer. Painter won the 100 fly as well. In the boys competition, Hunter Zettlemoyer won for the Black Panthers in the 50 free and Camden Weaver won the 100 breast.

Wellsboro’s Madison Robbins competed in the 200 free, finishing in 1:14.83 and swam a 33.21 in the 50 free on the girls side. On the boys side, Wellsboro’s Hayne Webster swam in the 100 back and finished in 1:14.14.

Lewisburg defeated Mount Carmel in girls swimming, 113-29, but the Green Dragon boys fell, 54-33. Alex Decker won the 100 free in 58.93 seconds and picked up a win in the 100 breast (1:15.73). Kimberly Shannon won the 200 IM and 500 free. In the 500 free, Shannon won by nearly two minutes.

Mason Ordonez was a two-time winner, claiming victories in the 50 free (24.10) and 500 free (5:19.21). Mitchell Malusis won in the 200 IM and Kieran Davis won in the 100 breast.

• In boys basketball, Muncy defeated Northwest in overtime, 52-45. Max Rymsza and Ross Eyer both scored 16 points to lift the Indians (9-3). The Indians held Northwest to seven and six points in the second and third quarters, respectively. Branson Eyer scored 11 for the Indians.

Sullivan County defeated Northumberland Christian, 49-35. Alex Schweitzer led Sullivan with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Trace Neary scored 11 points and had six rebounds and three assists and Jalen Thomas had 10 points and seven assists.

Gerhett Parrish had a team-high eight rebounds.

• Hughesville defeated Lewisburg in girls basketball, 40-33. Roz Noone had a near double-double with nine points and sevenr ebounds. Sophie Kilbride also had seven boards.

Hughesville was led by Lauren Henry’s 16 points.

North Penn-Liberty defeated Cowanesque Valley, 41-23. The Mounties’ Kiersten Mitstifer scored a team-high 15 points and Elizabeth Ritchie added eight.

CV was led by Abbby Ackley’s seven points.

Zuzu Shanaway experienced quite a senior moment, hitting a buzzer-beating jumper as St. John Neumann edged Montgomery, 35-34. Lily Reid found Shanaway open for the game-winner and scored a game-high 13 points as Neumann rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit and won its second straight game. Sheiana Tutler recorded her second straight double-double, going for 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Gigi Parlante added five points, six rebounds and two assists. Faith Persing scored a team-high 12 points and Shelby McRae added 11.

All-state guard Emily Garvin scored 24 points and helped Class A state title contender Northumberland Christian defeat Montoursville, 58-33. Maddie Adams scored 14 points for Montoursville.

• Bucknell’s Zach Hartman and Darren Miller made the first NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, which are used in the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Hartman checked in at seventh in the 165-pound weight class while Miller was slotted 23rd at 133 pounds. Hartman’s position is his highest ever in the NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings; he previously was slotted 10th at 157 pounds in the 2018-19 campaign’s first rendition. This is Miller’s second appearance on this listing; he previously was placed 33rd in the 2019-20 season’s third edition.

Hartman has compiled a 7-0 record in 2020-21, registering two pins and one technical fall. The junior has been ranked in the national top 10 by Intermat and FloWrestling for five-consecutive weeks. A 2020 Honorable Mention All-American and two-time EIWA runner-up, his career record currently stands at 62-17 (30-5 dual).

Miller has gone 5-1 with two technical falls to date. The sophomore’s most notable victory came over then No. 11 Tony Madrigal of Oklahoma by a 4-1 decision; it was his first career victory over a nationally ranked opponent and propelled him up the national rankings.
