Local roundup: Jersey Shore sweeps Central Mountain in boys, girls track

Jersey Shore swept Central Mountain in both boys (107-43) and girls (78-71) track and field competition Tuesday afternoon.

On the girls side, Jersey Shore’s Aubrey Sechrist won three individual events in the 1,600 (5:59.00), 400 (1:05.20) and 800 (2:39.10). Central Mountain’s Kiahna Jones won the 100 in 13.80 and also won the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Jersey Shore’s Sam Machmer was a two-event winner in the shot put and discus.

On the boys side, Jersey Shore won all but four events. Ezra Miller won the 110 and 300 hurdles events. Brady Jordan won the 200 in 25.30 and the long jump with a distance of 17-3. Central Mountain’s Anton Stratts earned a victory in the shot put and discus.

• Nolah Moyer and Rory Oden combined to toss a one-hitter as Muncy defeated Sugar Valley in its softball season opener, 11-1, in six innings. Moyer and Oden also combined for seven of Muncy’s 14 hits and drove in three runs. Lily Frederick was 3 for 4 for the Indians with a double and three RBIs.

• Muncy defeated Bloomsburg, 5-0, in boys tennis. Kaleb Meyer defeated Andy Madar at No. 1 singles, 5-7, 6-4, 7-4. Ernie Coopes won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Marshall Rothrock won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Montoursville defeated Central Columbia, 3-2, to improve to 4-0. Jared Matlack won at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) and was the only Warrior to win in singles competition.

DJ Alexander and Greyson Simms won at No. 1 doubles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 and Domanick Young and Noah Shaffer won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-1, to help Montoursville win.

The Warriors host Muncy on Thursday for a 4 p.m. match.

• Hughesville went on an offensive rampage at Warrior Run, blasting four home runs, pounding out 24 hits and defeating the Defenders, 22-3, in five innings in baseball. Devin Swank homered twice, Clayton Poust finished a double shy of the cycle and Carter Cowburn went 4 for 4 with a home run, double, four RBIs and four runs.

Cooper Kitchen dominated in relief and Weston Bellows went 3 for 5 with a double as Canton rallied from a one-run fifth-inning deficit and defeated Cowanesque Valley, 8-6. Carter Route was 2 for 2 with a double.

• After leading the MAC Freedom in scoring and rebounding, senior Erica Lutz earned her first career first-team all-conference honor and the third all-conference accolades of her career.

• Sophomore Danny Goff hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth and allowed just one run over seven innings pitched to lead the Mansfield University softball team to a 5-2 victory in game two to earn a split with Shepherd. The Mounties fell, 10-2, in game one.

Lock Haven pulled off a college softball sweep of Millersville, winning the opener, 10-5, and the nightcap, 10-2. Casey Carpenter and Jada Schellhammer each homered in game one for Lock Haven, as it used a five-run seventh inning to break open a tied game. Riley McClellan went 3 for 5 in game two, scoring three runs.
