Local roundup: Sullivan boys win in District 4 Class A playoffs

Sullivan County defeated Meadowbrook Chrsitian, 56-36, in the District 4 Class A quarterfinals in boys basketball Tuesday night.

Trace Neary scored 18 for the Griffins and Alex Schweitzer, Trey Higley and Riley King all added eight points. King added six steals.

Sullivan County will advance to play St. John Neumann in the district semifinals at a time and day to be determined.

• Southern Columbia defeated Muncy, 58-24, in the District 4 Class AA girls basketball playoffs. Bell Hitesman led the Indians with eight points and Brandi Hitesman added six.

Ava Novak scored 15 for Southern and Ally Griscavage and Grace Callahan both added 11.

• The Penn State women’s basketball team started fast but wasn’t able to keep an offensive rhythm as No. 24 Rutgers earned a 74-56 win in New Jersey in Big Ten action Tuesday night.

Senior Niya Beverley led Penn State with 20 points and dished seven assists with no turnovers. Sophomore Anna Camden followed with 14 points behind a career high-tying four three-pointers.

Arella Guirantes scored 21 for Rtgers and Tekia Mack had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double.

It’s Beverley’s second 20-point game in the last three contests, and her eight double-digit effort this season.

Rutgers grabbed the momentum back in the fourth quarter and Penn State wasn’t able to overcome the deficit despite a trio of three-pointers in the final minutes.

• Bucknell senior John Meeks earned a spot on the All-Patriot League third team.

Meeks, who received the same recognition last year, might have been higher on the list but was limited to four appearances during this abbreviated season. He missed the first four games due to an injury, and then after the Bucknell program was paused for four weeks, Meeks had to sit out the two games against American this past weekend due to COVID-19 protocols.

When Meeks was on the floor, the 6-foot-6 forward was nearly unstoppable. The Bison won all four games in which he played, and he averaged 24.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
