Local roundup: Wellsboro tennis blanks CV

Wellsboro blanked Cowanesque Valley, 5-0. Joe Doty won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Brett Meise.

Will Poirier and Zach Singer won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Poirier won, 6-1, 6-1 and Singer won, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles competition, Wellsboro won at No. 2 doubles via forfeit. Hayne Webster and Jacob Abadi won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-3 against Ben Doben and Maverick Graves.

Central Mountain beat Mifflinburg, 5-0, to improve to 3-0. David Lindsay won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles over Mifflinburg’s Gabe Greb. Ethan Hall earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Nate Brinker won at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3.

Jackson Walker and Leisher Gugino won at No. 1 doubles over Kellen Beck and Adam Snayberger, 6-4, 7-6.

Montoursville opened the year with a 4-1 win against Hughesville. Jared Matlack won at No. 2 singles for the Warriors, 6-3, 6-2, and Tyler Gilbert beat Austin Young at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 7-5 (10-12). Hughesville’s Logan Burns won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

• The Bald Eagles benefitted from nine saves from goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini and they scored with 6:05 left in double-overtime as the Lock Haven University field hockey team secured a thrilling 2-1 upset-win over No. 20 Massachusetts.

It marked a huge win for Lock Haven, who was playing at home for the first time since the fall 2019 season. The victory was the first for LHU over UMass since the 2015 season and just the second Lock Haven win over the Minutewomen in school history.

• The Lock Haven University softball team was downed by Kutztown in PSAC Eastern Division play, 6-0 and 3-2.

The Lock Haven offense was led by Summer Peters who made magic out of her bat and finished the day 6 for 6 after the two games. In the closely contested second game, Peters scored both of Lock Haven’s runs. She also finished the day with two stolen bases.

Despite the game two loss, Warrior Run grad Madison Waltman threw an impressive game. Pitching the complete game, she scattered a mere five hits, despite facing 27 batters, and only surrendered three runs.
