Local roundup: Montgomery blanks St. John Neumann in girls tennis 5-0

Montgomery blanked St. John Neumann in girls tennis, 5-0. Sam Ulrich earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Adelyn Dawes. Mallorie Myers (No. 2 singles) and Jenna Waring (No. 3) each had 6-0, 6-0 wins.

Loyalsock defeated Lewisburg, 3-2. The Lancers won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles by Anna Hall (6-0, 6-1) and Mia Blas (6-2, 6-2). The Lancers’ other victory came at No. 1 doubles where Maddie Hall and Izzy Dadzie beat Jayden Thomas and Grace Bruckhart, 6-2, 6-0.

Lewisburg’s Kaitlyn Fessler won at No. 3 singles over Maggie Ryder, 6-1, 6-2.

South Williamsport defeated Wellsboro, 4-1. Eve Jackson won at No. 1 singles for the Mounties, 6-1, 6-2. Wellsboro’s win came at No. 3 singles where Hannah Nuss beat Mia McNaul, 7-5, 6-2.

Celia Shemory earned a three-set win at No. 2 singles against Montoursville’s Alaina Marchioni, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to help Jersey Shore earn a 3-2 win over the Warriors.

Kayla Probert, Emma Poorman and Bella English all earned wins at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively, as Bucktail defeated Muncy, 5-0.

Despite missing three players, a young Hughesville team put together a strong performance against defending District 4 champion Central Columbia in a 4-1 loss. Freshman Sarah Buck won a straight-set singles match, 6-3, 6-0, and Destiny Flowers took Reilly Joss to a second set tiebreaker. Both doubles matches also were competitive as Hughesville (4-2) continued its strong start.

• Milton defeated Central Mountain in boys soccer, 4-2. After Central Mountain tied the game in the second half, Milton’s Carter Lilly and Austin Gainer both scored to put the Black Panthers ahead.

Jersey Shore’s Carter Stackhouse scored off a pass from Connor Cornelius at the 23:27 mark in the second half as the Bulldogs defeated Montoursville at home, 1-0. Both teams had six shots on goal.

• After a shot hit the goal post and came bouncing out into the field of play, Williamsport’s Kailee Helmrich got to it and sent it in halfway through overtime to give the Millionaires an exciting 1-0 win against Loyalsock in girls soccer.

The Millionaires (1-0) didn’t allow any Loyalsock (2-1) shots on goal. Rylie French had 13 saves for the Lancers.

“I told the girls they had to come in with momentum and confidence. They bunkered down and kept eight people back and they just let us come,” Williamsport coach Scott McNeill said. “We got closer and closer and finally Kailee put one away.”

Makenzi Leitenberger scored four goals in the first half as Hughesville blanked Sullivan County, 7-0, in the Spartans’ season opener. The Spartans didn’t allow a single shot defensively and had 24 shots on goal. Alexis Kurzawa scored twice.

• Williamsport beat Montoursville in high school golf, 184-196. Kydreece Burks led Williamsport with a nine-hole 42. Devin Whitford shot a 46 for the Millionaires and Landon Arriaga had a 47. Alexandria Chilson shot a 49.

Montoursville was led by Cameron Francis and Aiden Evans, who both shot 46s.

Peyton Newlen shot a 40 and Griff Walizer shot a 41 in a nine-hole contest against Mifflinburg as the Wildcats won, 167-190.

Lewisburg beat Shamokin, 163-214. In the nine-hole competition, Lewisburg’s Will Gronlund led his team with a 35 while Sean Kelly shot a 39. Ava Markunas had a 40 and Zah Gose had a 49.

Wellsboro finished second in an NTL meet at Corey Creek Golf Course with a 375 score, trailing only Athens (374). Cowanesque Valley was fifth (446) and North Penn-Mansfield was seventh (510).

Blake Hamblin led the Green Hornets with an 89 and Hannalee Cleveland shot a 93. Hayden Zuchowski had a 94. Cowanesque Valley was led by Jordan Vargeson’s 96 and N.P.-Mansfield was led by Andrew Green’s 83.

• Lewisburg dominated in boys cross country with a meet against Selinsgrove, Southern Columbia and Loyalsock as the Green Dragons had nine finishers in the top 10. Jacob Hess won with a time of 17 minutes, 3 seconds and Thomas Hess finished in second in 17:38.

Against Warrior Run (15-50), Mifflinburg (15-50) and Midd-West (15-44), Williamsport cruised as eight of the top 10 finishers were Millionaires, including Ethan Holcomb, who took first with a time of 18:01.

• In girls cross country, Lewisburg’s Maggie Daly finished third (21:39) and Alanna Jacob finished fourth (22:01) in a meet that featured Selinsgrove, Southern Columbia and Loyalsock.

Williamsport lost a close contest vs. Warrior Run, 25-31. Williamsport Danyse Washington took second with a time of 22:51, but Warrior Run had the third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishers.

• Muncy opened its season in girls field hockey with a 4-0 win against Danville. Muncy senior captain Hallie McClure scored twice. Isabelle Gush had a goal and assist, Lacy Eckard had a goal and assist and Madeleine Boerckel added an assist.

• Freshman Arianna Santos posted a career-best 11 kills to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-17) win over Penn College.

Freshman Dakota Woomer added seven kills and hit.375 while Santos also posted three blocks. Freshman Sydney Guethlein posted five blocks and three kills. Sophomore Gabriela Chaparro Coss notched 15 assists and eight digs and freshman Kendall Myers (posted four aces and 28 digs as the libero.
