Local roundup: Montgomery boys soccer earns 1st win since reinstating program in 2020
Montgomery defeated Towanda, 6-2, to earn the program’s first varsity victory after reinstating the program in 2020 in boys soccer on Saturday afternoon. The last varsity win prior to the program being discontinued in 2016 was a victory over Mount Carmel on Oct. 21, 2015.
The Red Raiders went ahead early on a goal by sophomore Owen Sherman in the first minute of the game.
“It was truly a team effort for us today. Owen and Noah had a great day on offense. They worked well together in absence of our normal forward Dolson Smith who will return to play later this week,” Montgomery coach Mike Sherman said. “Hunter Leet and Aiden Bitler were able to control midfield and support the defense led by Hunter Twigg, Hunter Jackson and Brad Foresman.”
Alfred Romano scored two first-half goals as Lewisburg defeated Camp Hill, 3-0, in boys soccer. Ian McKinney scored the Green Dragons’ third goal and Eddie Monaco and Philip Permyashkin both added assists.
Wellsboro defeated Troy, 5-1. The Green Hornets scored three second-half goals. Jack Poirier had two goals and an assist for Wellsboro. Owen Richardson scored twice and Ethan Barlett added a goal.
Mason Winslow, Tyler Baker and Dominick Pulizzi scored goals as Montoursville defeated Central Mountain, 3-1. Pulizzi also had an assist, while Cooper Confer scored for Central Mountain.
In girls soccer, Hughesville defeated Line Mountain, 3-0. Makenzi Leitenberger scored and had an assist and Hailey Poust and Libby Fortin both recorded goals. The win improves the Spartans to 4-1.
Milton defeated North Penn-Mansfield, 10-0, after scoring six goals in the second half. Janae Bergey scored four goals and Alexis Beaver scored twice.
Muncy cruised past CMVT, 17-0, as three players had two or more goals. Mia Edkin had a monster game, scoring five goals, while Cierra Charles and Emilie Nagel both scored three times. Anna Seeley added two goals as Muncy fired 32 shots on goal.
Eve Jackson won a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles to highlight South Williamsportás 4-1 victory over Wellsboro. Jackson rallied from a set down and won the next two 6-2, 10-5. State champion Olivia Dorner cruised to a straight-set win and the doubles team of Gia Hart and Sadie Stahl were victorious, winning 7-5, 6-1. Hannah Nuss won an exciting three-set match at No. 3 singles for Wellsboro.
Muncy took first place in its annual tournament for girls field hockey. The Indians opened with an 8-0 win over Southern Huntingdon and then beat Benton in the championship, 2-0, with goals from Hallie McClure and Kaylyn Nierzwicki. McClure had a hat trick in the first game.
Danville took third by beating Southern Huntingdon, 4-1.
Muncy’s Isabelle Gush (midfield), Audrey Johnson (defense) and Willow Perakovich (defense) were named to the All-Tournament team.
In girls volleyball, Wellsboro defeated Troy, 3-1 (25-19, 25-11, 22-25, 25-11). Emma Owlett led the Green Hornets with 13 kills and Maddie Bordas had 11 assists. Emily Starkweather had 17 points.
Freshman Katryn Yocum and Elliott Bello each placed sixth and senior Max Hanson finished seventh to highlight a fast day for the Lycoming College cross country teams at the Cougar Classic at Misericordia.
Bello led the way for the men’s team, finishing in 22:36.60 with Hanson close behind, crossing the 6K-course’s finish line in 22:42.70 to pace the men’s team in the 37-runner field. Senior Diego Pallares posted a time of 26:33.70, junior Logan Franquet, a Loyalsock graduate, finished in 27:04.30 and first-year Nate Noel posted a time of 27:20.00.
Sophomore Joe Bamfo scored two goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s soccer team, as it ended Lebanon Valley College’s five-game win streak in a 3-2 win.
Bamfo scored his second goal in the 57th minute with a 16-yard dart from Tyler Flood and Williamsport graduate J.R. Confair.
Penn College tied Lancaster Bible in a double overtime contest, 1-1. Colton Wartman scored in the 81st minute for the Wildcats. Five minutes later Owen Yoder assisted Chad Tolson.
In women’s soccer, Lycoming senior Alicia Blizzard scored a career-high three goals as the Warriors defeated Bethany College, 9-0. Blizzard’s first two goals came in the first half. South Williamsport graduate Bella Green had four assists and Milton graduate Taylor Snyder assisted her goal in the 73rd minute.
Lancaster Bible defeated Penn College, 3-0, to drop the Wildcats to 2-2 overall. Abby Donaldson, Kendal Ream and Kara Huber all scored for Lancaster Bible.
Junior Rylee Donaldson scored her Patriot League-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season, and freshmen Kelley Francis and Teresa Deda also entered the scoring column as Bucknell opened Patriot League play with a 4-2 win over two-time defending champion Navy.
South Williamsport graduate Haley Neidig scored a goal in Pitt-Johnstown’s 5-2 win over Seton Hill. Williamsport graduate Katie Penman scored for Seton Hill.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Moir finished with 10 saves and the Mansfield University women’s soccer team held East Stroudsburg University scoreless for the final 82 minutes of competition, but the Warriors scored the game’s only goal in the eighth minute to steal a PSAC East victory, 1-0.
The men’s doubles pairing of sophomore Luke Leach, a Wellsboro graduate, and senior Casey Haas, a Montoursville graduate, advanced to the quarterfinals of the second flight of doubles at the MAC Individual Championship for the Lycoming College men’s tennis team.
Leach and Hass advanced with a 8-7 (3) win over Temple and Harth from King’s and narrowly missed reaching the semifinals, falling to Lebanon Valley’s Bauer and Byler, 8-7, (6).
Susquehanna defeated Penn College, 8-1. The Wildcats’ victory came at No. 1 doubles where Tucker Phillippe-Johansson and Paul Langbein beat Conor Ryana nd Carson Barry, 8-3.
