Local roundup: Todd Modispaw scores twice in Muncy boys 3-2 loss to Benton

Todd Modispaw scored twice, but Benton scored a goal in the 79th minute to lift the Tigers past the Indians, 3-2, in boys soccer on Wednesday afternoon. Modispaw’s two goals — assisted by Loudon Boring and Bode Art — tied the game in the 67th minute. Eli Slamka recorded nine saves.

Wellsboro blanked Galeton, 7-0. Jack Poirier had four goals and an assist in the Green Hornets’ victory. Wellsboro recorded five second-half goals.

Sullivan County’s Ben Carpenter scored two second-half goals as the Griffins defeated Montgomery, 4-1. Brock Wettlaufer and Kruz McCusker also scored for Sullivan County as Owne Schwietzer had two assists.

Ben Manning scored in the first half, but it was the only goal for South Williamsport as the Mounties fell to Mid-Penn rival Millville, 3-1. Brock Weaver had seven saves for South.

• Kailee Helmrich first tied the game and then she won it for Williamsport in overtime, beating a defender one-on-one and lifting her team to an exciting 2-1 win against Midd-West. Helmrich scored the game winner five minutes into overtime after tying it with eight minutes remaining off a Mallory Pardoe assist as Williamsport improved to 5-3. Helmrich set up here game-winner when the goalie was unable to clear the ball, pouncing on it at the 40-yard mark. The defense limited Midd-West to four shots and Adelia Engel made four saves.

Milton’s Mo Reiner made 23 saves in goal, but Central Columbia remained undefeated by beating the Black Panthers, 2-1, in double overtime. Janae Bergey scored off an assist by Mackenzie Lopez in the first half as the two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

Hughesville blanked BLoomsburg, 1-0, to improve to 5-4. With 33:32 remaining in the first half, Alexis Kurzawa scored off an assist by Jadyn McGinley and the Spartans’ defense played strong, allowing just one shot on goal.

• Central Mountain’s Gunner Redmond placed fourth at the District 6 golf tournament Tuesday at Scotch Valley Country Club with a score of 85. He beat Max Wager of State College in a card-off. State College’s John Olsen shot a 74 to take first.

• Ally McCann earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Breanna Chicas won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, as Williamsport’s girls tennis team blanked Milton, 5-0, in the first match of a doubleheader.

Gina Budman (No. 2 singles) and Destini Flowers (No. 3 singles) both helped Hughesville defeat Montoursville, 4-1. The Warriors’ lone win came at No. 1 singles by Kara Mann, 6-4, 6-4. Budman beat Alaina Marchioni at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1, and Flowers won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1 against Katelyn Good.

Jersey Shore’s Peyton Dincher battled Selinsgrove’s Fiona Finnerty for three hours to win in three sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-2) to help Jersey Shore win, 3-2, in the second match of a doubleheader. The Seals won the first match, 3-2.

Central Mountain fell to Shikellamy, 3-2. Kati Kwiatek won at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats, 6-4, 7-6, and Zeta Blesh earned a three-set, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles.

Loyalsock blanked Danville, 5-0. Anna Hall earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles while Mia Blass (No. 2 singles) and Maggie Ryder (No. 3) each earned 6-1, 6-2 wins.

Bucktail defeated Muncy, 5-0. Kayla Probert beat Bekah Rosario, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Emma Poorman earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

• North Penn-Liberty’s girls volleyball team defeated Loyalsock in three sets, 25-10, 25-7, 25-10. No other statistics were made available.

• Bucknell’s Grayson Cherubino was selected as a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy. Cherubino was among 176 semifinalists for this prestigious award, which is in its 32nd year. Of the 176 semifinalists, 36 hail from the FCS ranks, including four from the Patriot League.

Only Bucknell and Dayton have had a Campbell Trophy semifinalist each of the past 16 years.

• The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team knocked off Shepherd University, 2-1, in PSAC Eastern Division action.

Eva Stoessel got the Bald Eagles off and running in the 19th minute when she found the back of the net for her second goal of the year off an assist from Taylor Moritz. Lock Haven continued to test the Shepherd defense, firing off nine first half shots, but the 1-0 score line held until the halftime break.

Sophomore Emily Smith netted her second goal of the season to lead Mansfield University, and Millersville University scored in the closing seconds of regulation to highlight an exciting 1-1 double overtime PSAC East contest.

• Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Wilke made his first collegiate start for the Lycoming College men’s soccer team, making nine saves, but Lycoming fell 3-0 to ninth-ranked Messiah University.

The Warriors (4-3-2 overall) had two shots on goal and four in the game.

Wilke’s biggest save of the night came with a minute left in the first half, he dove across the goal, making two steps and a leap to get his hand on a shot at the far left post.

On a night when Bucknell struggled to generate many scoring chances, the young defense was rock-solid for 94 minutes, and then one of the Patriot League’s hottest goal-producers found his moment. Jordan Miller netted his league-leading sixth goal of the season, all coming in the last seven games, to send the Bison home with a 1-0 victory over Lehigh.

Senior co-captain Patrick O’Hara’s hustle play on the end line set the winning goal in motion, and it lifted the Bison to 1-1-1 in Patriot League play and 3-5-1 overall.

• Seven different players scored and sophomore August Lewis posted a shutout to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 7-0 PSAC victory over Mercyhurst University.

The Mounties (4-4, 1-1 PSAC) return to .500 overall and in conference after a dominate all-around performance. Mercyhurst fall to 0-9 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

After securing back-to-back weekend road wins, Lock Haven returned home to host a tough Cornell University squad, falling 1-0.

Caroline Ramsey scored early in the second quarter and the goal stood as the game-deciding mark.

For Lock Haven, goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini continued her strong play. She made two saves, including a stretched-out kick save in the first half.

• Lock Haven’s tennis team fell to Susquehanna, 5-4. Williamsport grad Mia Shuler came away with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles for the Bald Eagles.
