Lycoming football defeats King’s College 28-8

Three interceptions, two by sophomore Hunter Campbell, and the first 100-yard receiving day in the career of senior Tre’ Leach helped the Lycoming College football team post a 28-8 win over King’s College on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

The Lycoming defense allowed 268 yards on 74 total plays of offense from King’s (1-1 overall, 0-1 MAC), but just a safety and a fourth-quarter touchdown, thanks to the three takeaways. The offense racked up 346 yards on 57 plays, with senior Elijah Shemory, a Jersey Shore graduate, leading the way with 214 yards passing and a touchdown and 21 yards rushing and a score. He was efficient all game, going 14 of 20, being intercepted once and sacked just once.

Junior Joey Guida led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 61 yards and a score and junior Kyle Powell rushed eight times for 40 yards and a score, as Lycoming carried 37 times for 132 yards. Leach caught three passes for 101 yards, making two 40-plus yard connections with Shemory and senior Tyjah During caught five passes for 45 yards and a score.

Junior Cole Senior had eight tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss along with two hurries and senior Sam Pittsman posted eight tackles, 2.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and a breakup. Junior Abubakar Audu Jr. also had eight stops, one for loss and a half sack. Junior Kevin Gianoni notched four tackles for loss of his six and a sack and Campbell had the six tackles and two interceptions. Senior Gianni Bryant-Lopez also added a pick.

The game did not start off smoothly for the Warriors, as an interception and safety ended their first two drives. However, King’s only had two punts, two interceptions and a missed field goal to show for its first five drives. The Warriors got moving in the second quarter when a short punt gave the ball at the 45-yard line. Shemory connected with During three times in a span of four plays to get the ball to the King’s 23 and Lycoming ground it in from there with Shemory scoring from five yards out.

A King’s 3-and-out gave Lycoming the ball with 3:18 left in the half at their own 13. Passes to junior Aaron Wolcott for 21 yards and Leach for 41 got the ball to the 19, where Shemory found During for a 19-yard score with 57 seconds left in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter where King’s gained 34 total yards on 14 plays, the Warriors got the ball at their own 46, and helped by a 34-yard completion to senior Chase Cramer, the Warriors scored when Powell busted into the endzone from 25 yards out, making it 21-2.

King’s embarked on a nine-play, 71-yard drive late in the half, scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass with 5:51 left. The two-point conversation failed, though, leaving it 21-8, and the onside kick went out of bounds. After a 3-and-out when King’s used it last two timeouts, Campbell picked off his second pass at the King’s 24. On the next play, Guida iced the game with a 14-yard score.

Tyler Moore went 27 of 41 for 246 yards and a score and Quincy Clark led the rushing attack with seven carries for 19 yards for the Monarchs. Tim Costantino caught eight passes for 79 yards and Brandon Cohen caught six passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Brendan Mozeleski led the Monarchs with 12 tackles, 1.5 for loss and Tommy Gilmore had an interception.
