Taste the Town: Area bakeries, creameries offer sweet summer specials to enjoy all season long

Area bakeries sure know how to serve the sweets throughout the hot and sticky summer season. Sprinkled Sweet and Cups and Cakes, both in the Greater Williamsport area, offer a variety of treats to beat the heat.

A delectably sweet atmosphere

Located in Pine Square Courtyard at 349 Pine St., Suite 4, Sprinkled Sweet has a wide selection of homemade desserts including cupcakes, cheesecakes, cannolis, brownies, cakes, pastries, cupcakes, homemade ice cream and much more.

The bakery and artisan creamery has been open since 2015.

“It was always a dream of mine to have my own bakery,” said Aimee Hertwig, owner of Sprinkled Sweet.

Hertwig opened the shop after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in New York.

“We’re a full custom bakery. And then we also have our artisan creamery; we make our own homemade hard ice cream,” Hertwig said.

Sprinkled Sweet offers over 16 flavors of their homemade ice cream.

“I get my dairy in — I use Galliker’s Dairy. Right now, we’re making ice cream two times a week. We make about 32 to 36 buckets,” Hertwig said. “We add the dairy into it, and then we add what we need to add, whether it’s sprinkles or our chocolate chunk; we also make a homemade chocolate sauce.

“A lot of planning and prepping goes into our ice cream production.”

The ice cream window and outdoor seating provides a place for visitors to enjoy bands that often play at Pine Square Courtyard.

“We’re in such a great location. Pine Square is so fun. We do live music. They just put on such a great atmosphere for downtown,” Hertwig said.

The bakery’s downtown storefront is centrally located to all of Williamsport’s summer activities, including First Fridays and Little League celebrations.

Sprinkled Sweet also recently participated in Kids First Friday carnival in the Courtyard. There was face painting, games and Sprinkled Sweet cotton candy flavored ice cream.

“Then for Little League coming up, which we’re super excited about, we do a Grand Slam ice cream — Literally every candy that you can think of into an ice cream. And we serve the ice cream in baseball hats,” Hertwig said.

“I love being a small business downtown. The community really came together during COVID, especially when everybody could reopen. It was wonderful. Everyone came together and the outpouring of love was very touching,” Hertwig said.

Sprinkled Sweet is open Monday through Thursday noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 7 p.m.

Customizable, homemade deliciousness

Cups and Cakes, a new local favorite, offers a selection of desserts, milkshake specials, unique coffee flavors, freshly baked goodies, sunset ice cream and more.

The shop, located at 2062 Lycoming Creek Road, held its grand opening in March.

“Now that it’s been picking up a little bit, a lot more people have been stopping in the mornings, on the way home from work,” Zach Nash, owner, said.

The shop has weekly milkshake specials, along with their many other flavors.

“We do weekly milkshakes, for the whole summer,” Nash said. “We announce the weekly milkshake on our Facebook on Wednesdays.”

Cups and Cakes are also now available for events.

“I make cupcakes, cakes, baked goods and things like that for events regularly now,” Nash said. “All of the baked goods we make here. We bake everything here.”

Many of the products they offer, such as their coffee and ice cream, are sourced locally.

“The coffee that we’re getting for our hot coffee was from a company called Fresh Roasted Coffee, and they’re in Sunbury. So they roast it there and ship it to me and I brew it.

“Then I have cold brewed coffee that we’re getting from a company that’s made locally called Fox Den.”

The shop even offers customized orders.

“We do croissants, danishes and gluten-free stuff regularly. I can pretty much make anything to order. I’m willing to try anything,” Nash said.

Cups and Cakes is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
