Valley View celebrates centenarians
Valley View honors milestone birthdays
Celebrating five centenarian residents, Valley View Rehab and Nursing, Montoursville, honored five women. Together, they have a combined age of 507 years. To celebrate, Valley View held a celebration where family, friends and residents came together for fellowship and fun times.
Celebrating her milestone birthday at the beginning of the year, Mildred “Millie” Wagget turned 101 on Feb. 12.
She was born in 1918. She is the wife of the late John Wagget. She was employed at FMC.
Turning 100 on Sept. 6, Isabel Slupecke, of Montoursville and formerly of Camp Hill, was born in 1918. She enjoys art, painting and watching sports — especially Ohio State football.
She was a bacteriologist in the Navy where she worked on a cure for strep throat. She was stationed in Bethesda, Maryland. Slupecke is the oldest female veteran in Lycoming County.
She shared 32 years of marriage with her late husband, Ed. They were married on May 5, 1945.
She has two children, Melissa, of Williamsport, and Joe, who has since passed away; three grandchildren, Kristen, of York, Mathew, of Williamsport, and Laura, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and three great-grandchildren, Sean, Adelaide and the third due in February, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Turning 101 on June 4, Mildred “Millie” McFadden was born in 1918 in Hillsgrove and lived in Williamsport most of her life. She enjoys reading, playing Scrabble, set-back and 500 rummy and watching Fox News.
At 55, McFadden started a job as a dietary aid at the Williamsport Hospital where she was employed for 11 years. At 65, she had a nanny business.
She is the mother of Bernard, of Williamsport, Marilyn, of York, Michael, of South Williamsport, Jeanine, of Williamsport, Mathew, of Hershey, twins Theresa, of Bethlehem, and Regina, of Williamsport, and the late Steven. She has 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Celebrating her 104th birthday on Oct. 19, Gertrude Wainger was born in 1915 in Roaring Branch. She is the wife of the late Pearson Wainger. She has lived in Montoursville, Clearfield and Williamsport.
Beginning her career at the old Jefferson School, Gertrude taught first grade and ended her career at Cochran.
She is the mother of Allen, of Alexandria, Virginia. She has two grandsons, Rob and Jeff, and one granddaughter, Charlotte.
Born and raised city native, Betty Otterbein celebrated her 100th birthday on Oct. 26. To celebrate her birthday, family visited and they had cupcakes, ice cream and balloons.
Having a great green thumb, Otterbein grew violets and has a garden in the home.
She was married to the late Fred Otterbein Sr. and they celebrated 70 years of marriage. They were married on Nov. 23, 1939.
She is the mother of Fred Jr., of Jersey Shore, Gerald, of Muncy, Gene, of Picture Rocks, and Ann, of Linden. She has 17 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren, all over the United States.
