YMCA instructor finishes NYC marathon

Mother of three, teacher at Central Elementary School and Insanity instructor at the Williamsport Branch YMCA, Julie Pentico crossed off running in the TCS New York City Marathon off her bucket list on Nov. 3. After 3:17:04 of running through the streets of New York City, she crossed the finish line and took eighth in her age group, 50 to 54 years old, and 3,583rd overall.

Though, this was not her only big city marathon of the year. In April she ran her second Boston Marathon with the first being 23 years prior. She placed in 13th place out of 1,200 in her division at 3:17:20 and was 5,885th out of 26,657 participants overall.

Flat ground is not the only scenery Pentico takes on in her races. In the past year, she has taken on feats like Boulder Beast, a 27 mile trail race, and the Hyner View Trail Challenge 25K, featuring three major descents covering 4,000 feet of vertical climb.

In 2018, Julie was featured in Runner’s Gazette, “Warden, Pentico Capture the 29th NCR Marathon.” The race featured a 0.8 mile downhill into a 25.4 trail to follow. Julie clinched first place in the women’s division and 15th overall with a time of 3:05:32.

Each new race brings new challenges and goals for Pentico to reach. Her latest trail challenge and farthest distance to date was the Oil City 100K on Oct. 12 — just three weeks before her top-10 finish in the NYC marathon. After 62.2 miles of rough terrain, Julie again found herself in sixth place out of 76 runners with a time of 13:30:56.

In the future, Julie plans to run the Hyner Race 50K, World’s End 100K, Eastern State’s 100 Miler and the Rocksylvania Trail Series.
