Event Horizon rocks the Ground Floor 2.0

This Saturday, New York-based band Event Horizon will bring their mix of pop-punk and rock to the Ground Floor 2.0, 2925 W. Fourth St., beginning at 6:30 p.m. Bands Ervasa and Rescue Dawn also will be performing.

Craig Podell, along with John Clark, Parke O’Leary and Mars Vendz, started Event Horizon in their hometown of Mahopac, New York, around 8 years ago, after all of them had been playing music for quite some time.

Fast forward to 2016 and Event Horizon is on their 11th tour of the country.

“We’ve all always been jamming together,” Podell said in a phone interview with the Sun-Gazette. “We decided it was time to be serious and start a band together. That’s how we became who we are today.”

“Since we were little, this is our passion. We’ve been playing shows since ninth grade,” he added.

Podell reminisces of one of his most memorable performances with Event Horizon; the band was playing a little spot in Michigan on their second tour ever.

“This one place sticks out. It was a Sunday night and we didn’t even start playing until midnight. It was a coffee shop type place. Everyone stayed and we played for two hours. Nobody left — everyone was just loving the music,” he said.

That was a moment that solidified that Podell was on the right path. “It’s always great to see people loving the music that I’m playing with my family. The reason we are playing  —  we love playing together! It’s my best friends on stage, getting all sweaty and playing rock and roll.”

Podell describes the band’s music — one of the hardest things to do as a musician these days — as first rock and roll and second alternative, pop, with some “trippy effects in there.”

The creative flow for the their original music is a communal one. Podell said they colaborate together as musicians. “It’ll be a guitar rift that one of the players had in their head and we all come together and add in our own little flavor.”

As for lyrics, Podell said lead singer Clark is the creative one for that aspect.

He said the band is inspired by different genres, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin and Sound Garden. Podell cites Ryan Martini, bass player for Mudvaine, as a personal inspiration of his. “It’s completely different from the music we play, but his style got me into playing bass.”

For their set at Ground Floor 2.0, Podell said the audience can expect a rocking, energetic time.

“We’re lively and upbeat. We’ve got a crazy sound — things that are out of the norm. It’s definitly where you should be.”

The future only promises to get busier for Event Horizon and Podell couldn’t be more excited.

“We have a full length album coming out, we just finished recording. We’re about to release our single, ‘Ricochet.’ We just finished filming and we’re gonna release a music video too,” he said. The music video will be released on VH1, MTV and most social media outlets.

“Since we’ve been doing this for so long, it was kind of a shock,” Podell said. “It was really real — this is amazing. It’s happening! Things are unfolding. And I know we are headed in the right direction.”
