Dylan Rockoff to release new album ‘Semicolon & Parentheses’ next month

On Jan. 17, Nashville-based recording artist and Loyalsock native Dylan Rockoff is releasing his latest full-length album, “Semicolon & Parentheses,” on all major streaming platforms. Riding the momentum of two successful singles released earlier this year, which also appear on the forthcoming album, Rockoff looks to not only solidify his place as an up-and-comer on the national music scene, but also to make a difference in people’s lives, and help those who are less fortunate.

And so Rockoff chose the release of the first single from “Semicolon & Parentheses” to come with an extra-special announcement. “Bad Haircut,” was officially released on Nov. 1, and on his social media accounts, Rockoff revealed that he would be donating one hundred percent of the pre-order proceeds from “Semicolon & Parentheses,” and each of the album’s singles, to non-profit charity Locks of Love. To Rockoff and his team, the idea just made sense.

“My team and I knew we wanted to raise money for charity in conjunction with this album and when I wrote Bad Haircut, a song about losing the attention of a young crush over the look of my hair, we felt that Locks of Love would be a great partner. Given the light-hearted nature of the song we wanted to take the opportunity to do something real and tangible for children who deal with medical hair loss, and help them to feel beautiful and loved when they need it most,” Rockoff said.

Living in Nashville has its perks, and there is no denying the benefits of being in close proximity to other established recording artists and producers. On “Semicolon & Parentheses,” Rockoff worked with producers Lucas Arens and Johnny Simmen. According to Rockoff, Arens produced and recorded the entire album, except for two tracks — “Supernova” and “Out of Season” — which were recorded and produced by Simmen. The resulting sound is something new, not just for Rockoff’s brand, but also to popular music in general. Rockoff and his team have accordingly coined a phrase to describe the genre-bending sound: pop-hop singer-songwriter.

“Semicolon & Parentheses” evolves Rockoff’s established rock/folk sound, and explores the possibilities of rhythm and blues and hip hop, for which Rockoff has a knack. The album also maintains continuity throughout.

“First I’d say that ‘Semicolon & Parentheses’ is a more cohesive, complete listen compared to my previous albums. Stylistically my previous albums were more rock and folk-influenced whereas ‘Semicolon & Parentheses’ is more R & B and hip-hop leaning than any of my prior work,” Rockoff said. “We keep calling this album ‘pop-hop singer-songwriter’ and I think that’s a very appropriate categorization of the style/genre.”

Rockoff’s versatility as a vocalist is laid bare on the tracks; his talent has nowhere to hide. Those who have been paying attention have already been witness to Rockoff’s abilities. He has sung the National Anthem at Major League Baseball and Little League Championship games, and has opened for Bon Jovi, among many other deserved accolades. The right people have been paying attention, and Rockoff’s opportunities to perform across the country have been increasing accordingly.

“Over the summer, I got to play a handful of acoustic sets at Bonnaroo, which was really cool, because not only did I get to perform, I got an artist pass for the weekend and got to see Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Post Malone, and some other killer artists and bands for free. In September, I had the opportunity to tour the east coast with my band, and we had packed houses in each of the four cities — Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, and Nashville — including a sellout at Piano’s in NYC,” Rockoff said.

The Piano’s show had an especially important meaning to Rockoff.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to play a sold-out show in NYC so that was pretty [hashtag] awesome from my perspective,” he said.

Performing live with a band has helped his music reach a broader audience, according to Rockoff.

“I also got to tour around with American Idol winner David Cook this summer and most recently played a run of shows with him out in California in November. The growth of the live performance in terms of attendance and visibility has been really great the past few months,” he said.

As with so many local musical artists who have gone on to national and international fame, Rockoff’s foundational experiences with music occurred largely with the Uptown Music Collective, where he received valuable formal training and industry skills.

“I can’t say enough about the Uptown Music Collective and its role in my development as a musician, a writer, and an overall human being. Outside of my immediate family, Dave Brumbaugh was the best teacher I ever had. The entire staff of the Uptown Music Collective has always been wonderful to me — from my time there as a student and beyond,” he said.

Rockoff’s gratitude is not limited to the Uptown Music Collective and extends to the entire Williamsport community. Modest though its population size may be, the city’s support gives credence to the adage that quality is more important than quantity.

“The Williamsport community — they have been overwhelmingly supportive of me throughout my entire musical journey. From when I was performing in my first Collective shows at the Community Arts Center, to my countless local shows with Dylan & Maverick, ClydeFrog, and now my solo project, I’ve been blown away by the way people show up, share up, an d spread the word. I feel very lucky to call Williamsport home and I always look forward to coming home whether I’m performing or not. The people here are so warm and encouraging of my musical pursuits,” Rockoff said.

In December, Williamsport will be host to several performances by Rockoff, both as a solo act and with his side project Clyde Frog. On Dec. 22, Rockoff teamed up with The Uptown Music Collective to give a special performance at The Old Corner, that raised funds for Locks of Love, with students of the Collective sitting in with him as featured musicians and backup. Rockoff will also be performing with Clyde Frog today at The Valley Inn in Duboistown, and New Year’s Eve at the Genetti in Williamsport.

“Semicolon & Parentheses” is now available for pre-order on all major streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Google Play. The album will be available for purchase on Jan. 17. Follow @dylanrockoff on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook for more detailed updates on future Dylan Rockoff tour dates and shows.
