WSO to perform ‘Heroes and Heroines’ show at CAC

If you love movies and the music scores that help them evoke emotion, you’re in luck! The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra is set to host its “Heroes and Heroines: A Movie Night” performance at 7:30 p.m. March 14 at the Community Arts Center, 220 West Fourth St.

The night will feature beloved tunes from many famous cinematic titles, including “The Magnificent Seven,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Gone with the Wind,” “Mary Poppins,” “Exodus,” “Batman,” “Anastasia,” “Superman,” “Pocahontas” and “Spider-Man.”

“I am very excited for the WSO to present the music of some very popular movies in our upcoming concert,” said Gerardo Edelstein, WSO music director. “We have chosen some excellent scores written by great composers like John Williams, Elmer Bernstein and Danny Elfman, among others.”

In presenting its “Heroes and Heroines” show, the WSO is mainting the effort it has made over the last several years to provide the community with a night of pop music that is more accessible to the average listener. This is done for two primary reasons: Everybody, including all of those in the symphony, loves the music; and it helps draw in audience members that might be apprehensive to attend a WSO show otherwise.

“With these concerts we want to bring to the CAC people who have never attended one of our performances and make it very special so they can return,” said Edelstein.

As a lifelong movie lover, Edelstein said that even as a kid he enjoyed cinematic experiences all the more when he would leave the theater humming one of the songs he heard during the film. He also mentioned how the scoring within a movie helps add a ” powerful and emotional aspect” that words cannot express.

“I can’t imagine a good movie without a good score,” said Edelstein.

In an effort to appeal to fans of all ages, the WSO selected music from movies that span a wide range of time for its upcoming performance. That’s why the group has paired the music from classics like “Exodus,” “Gone with the Wind” and “The Magnificent Seven” with movies that will speak to younger generations, like “Spiderman,” “Batman” and Pocahontas.”

“In preparing this program, we concentrated on characters that people from all ages will know and recognize, and it is so much fun to go through some of the most memorable tunes (in these movies),” said Edelstein. “We all love to identify with a hero or heroine when going to the movies, and in this program we have so many to choose from!”

To add to the fun of the show, Edelstein said the WSO encourages children and adults alike to dress up as their favorite hero or heroine for this special concert.
