Family of five displaced following Hughesville fire

A Hughesville family of five has been displaced following a fire in the 40 block of North Broad Street Saturday afternoon.
Alerted by a smoke detector, a resident of the home looked outside to see the porch engulfed in flames, and called 911 just after 2 p.m., according to Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dan Dorman.
Several neighbors also reported the flames, Dorman said.
The porch of the residence was fully involved when fire personnel arrived on the scene. Parts of the home’s exterior and roof were also damaged in the blaze.
A brush truck on its way to a vegetation fire in the 500 block of Tom Hill Road in Moreland Township was re-routed to the scene, arrived first and was able to knock down the bulk of the fire within 20 minutes, the chief said.

No injuries were reported as a result of the inferno, the cause of which was determined to be accidental, Dorman said.
A family dog was safely removed from the home as emergency crews arrived.
The home is not occupiable at this time, the chief said.
“There was a lot of water and smoke damage inside, as well as damage to the exterior and the roof,” Dorman said.
The American Red Cross was notified of the situation, the chief said.
Along with Hughesville, crews from Picture Rocks, Montoursville, Lairdsville and Montgomery also responded to the call.
“We want to thank all the neighboring fire departments who assisted at the incident,” Dorman said, noting that in addition to the vegetation fire, Hughesville emergency personnel were also responding to a vehicle accident in the 1 block of North Main Street at the time of the house fire.
