Penn College to hold lecture on creating a meaningful life

With wit and wisdom, a teacher intends to offer a meaningful conversation on our choices and our chances when he takes the stage as the featured presenter in a popular, annual lecture at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Bruce A. Wehler, assistant professor of English composition, is this year’s presenter in the David London My Last Words Lecture Series. His talk, “What Are You Full Of? (The Things We Carry),” is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium.

“Our lives reflect our choices, and we carry the full weight of those choices everywhere we go as we make our own way in this world,” Wehler said. “At times, we all need to stop and examine what we are carrying that is weighing us down, the attitudes and actions, the beliefs and the blinders that hinder us from experiencing the fullness of life that should be ours. By surrounding ourselves with good people, by appreciating the value of our experiences, and by choosing to live without regret, each one of us can choose to create an extraordinary life.”

With stories, anecdotes, humor and wisdom, Wehler hopes to inspire his audience to “create a truly meaningful life by saying a resounding ‘Yes!’ to what life offers each of us.”

The David London My Last Words Lecture Series challenges faculty members, nominated by students and alumni, to express thoughts as if they knew it was their final opportunity to share insight and offer inspiration.

Begun in February 2006, the lecture series was renamed during 2008-09 in honor of London, an associate professor of speech communication/composition who died in May 2008.

Wehler holds a doctorate degree in adult education from Penn State University. His dissertation was devoted to a study of foster parent learning in northeast Pennsylvania. He earned a master’s degree in special education/exceptionalities from Bloomsburg University, a master’s degree in theology from Eastern Baptist Seminary and a bachelor’s degree in English and religion from Lycoming College.

A native of Williamsport, Wehler has been a full-time faculty member at Penn College for seven years. Previously, he taught at the college as an adjunct instructor for 19 years. In 2007, he received the college’s Distinguished Teaching Award for Part-time Teaching Excellence. His academic experience includes 15 years of teaching English and special education in the Loyalsock Township School District.

Wehler and his wife of 23 years, Donna, are the parents of nine children.

A plaque presentation and reception will follow Wehler’s lecture, which is free and open to the public. The talk is among events kicking off the college’s homecoming 2015 celebration.
