Montoursville students compete in academic decathlon

The Academic Decathlon of Pennsylvania held its annual state finals earlier this month in State College.

Montoursville Area High School qualified for the state finals by scoring high enough at the Central Pennsylvania Regional Competition.

This was the ninth consecutive year Montoursville advanced to the state finals. Montoursville came in 11th place overall out of 14 teams that had advanced that far, and was fourth out of six teams in the small school division. Medalists were as follows:

Honors division

Sophie Smith (10th grade) – Gold in literature and bronze in music.

Joel Rehn (10th grade) – Silver in science.

Scholastic division

Joe Rose (12th grade) – Silver in economics and silver in math.

Matt Marks (11th grade) – Gold in math.

Ben Kutay (ninth grade) – Bronze in essay.

Varsity division

Cierra Frantz (10th grade) – Gold in music, gold in math and silver in essay.

Adam Stugart (10th grade) – Silver in economics.

Also competing were senior Gabe Silva and freshman Kasey Foust.
