Summer STEM camp coming to Warren L. Miller Elementary

MANSFIELD — Camp Invention, a nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, will be at Warren L. Miller Elementary School, today through Friday. This program is open to any child in the region entering first grade through sixth grade.

Camp Invention is focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of making and inventing. Through hands-on programming, Camp Invention encourages children to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum inspired by some of the world’s greatest inventors.

“We are excited to see how much this program has grown in such little time”, said Jesse Maine, director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at Southern Tioga School District. “This year more than 130 students will attend camp from all over the area, including students from Southern Tioga, Wellsboro Area, Troy Area and Northern Tioga school districts.” If your child is not signed up yet, spaces are still available at bit.ly/2018CampInvention.

This is the fourth annual Camp Invention for our region, hosted by Southern Tioga School District and led by Southern Tioga Faculty. Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by the National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees. This year’s curriculum features several video challenges from these inductees encouraging children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. These hands-on activities include:

• Optibot: Campers will launch into the future with their own Optibot — a small self-driving robot that senses changes in light.

• Robotic Pet Vet: Throughout this module, campers nurse their robotic puppy back to health and design and build dog parks as they hammer out ideas for the best park attraction.

• Mod My Mini Mansion: Campers will dream up and design their very own futuristic smart home filled with gadgets, LEDs, technology and innovations.

• Stick To It: Campers will invent something new every day as they explore what it is like to be a physicist, engineer and entrepreneur. Young innovators will invent, make and craft solutions to real-world challenges by building their own prototypes and discovering that anything is possible.

At the end of the program, each camper will bring home two personalized robots.
