Taking the opportunity to promote empathy and compassion, the students of Loyalsock Valley Elementary School, in the Montoursville Area School District, spent over 40,500 minutes, in total, reading to earn a Buddy Bench. The bench, which came from Ohio, arrived on Nov. 15.
“Recess is not always the fun time for children adults think it is. Many times a student can feel lonely and left out. Our goal with the bench, is to assist a student who needs a playmate at recess, to find one, by having a seat,” said Bonnie Bair, reading teacher.
Bair explained the drive to acquire the bench was a cross curriculum effort with teachers and students, from all grades participating. Several children performed a skit which explained the Buddy Bench rules to the rest of the student body, Bair said.
