Class of 2020 student speakers: ‘We will never forget the foundations’

My wildest dreams could never have imagined the Class of 2020 facing a situation like the one we are living right now. Times have surely changed, but our inner strength has allowed us to gather here today. …

General George S. Patton once said, “Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.”

Now, I’m not saying that our recent troubles are likened to fighting in two world wars, but I have concluded that the past two months of our lives have been a rather difficult and dark spot of our country’s history. The fact that we are all sitting here today, watching ourselves walk across the stage to claim our diplomas, signifies that we have achieved success despite witnessing the proverbial “bottom.”

We have all chosen to pursue a path unique to our futures, and I believe that the success we have reached today will only be continued if we learn how to see the light in the darkness, recognize the foundation of success, and realize that our dreams are limitless. …

We traveled the world with Mr. Peterman, became inventors in STEM class and learned … that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. I believe that my peers and I can all agree that the bumps on the road through high school helped us to build character. Whether it be struggling with a difficult class, or finding some unexpected critters in our lunch food, we prevailed, just as we do today. …

Let us not see today as a time of sadness and regret, but as one of remembering the good times and transforming the life lessons high school has taught us into prosperous and happy futures. …

During our time at Hughesville High School, my classmates and I have all met at least one teacher or staff member who we will positively remember for the rest of our lives. …Without our teachers, we would have never learned the skills that will allow us to achieve our dreams. …

I would like to thank the Class of 2020. We have been through so much together, and it is hard to fathom that today is most likely one of the last times we will all be together. You will all hold a special place in my heart forever. …

I find it to be an amazing parallel that so many of us worked as a team to learn something together, but will eventually use it in so many different ways. Soon we will all go our separate ways, but we will never forget the foundations that we formed together as Hughesville High School’s Class of 2020. …

Together we have endured the unimaginable. Together we will bounce back, realize our potentials and achieve every dream we have imagined.
