Penn College’s Pathways Scholarship assists transition to degree programs

Pennsylvania College of Technology has established a new scholarship to support students completing Workforce Development programs in practical nursing and emergency medical technician who wish to further their education.

The scholarship provides assistance for practical nursing graduates interested in the nursing, LPN to RN program at Penn College and graduates of the EMT course interested in pursuing one of the college’s paramedic majors.

Donor support through the Penn College Foundation is allowing the college to establish a Pathways Scholarship for these students. Scholarship recipients will receive $1,500 awards, renewable for the second year of the degree program.

For the nursing aspect of the scholarships, applicants must have completed the Practical Nursing Program at Penn College at Wellsboro and have earned their LPN licensure. Applicants for the paramedic aspect of the scholarship must have completed the program offered by Workforce Development and have earned their certification as an EMT.

In addition to present and future graduates, students who completed these programs in previous years and have maintained their licensure are eligible for the scholarship.

“This new Pathways Scholarship will directly impact the career mobility of participants, as well as help meet the industry demand for paramedics and registered nurses,” said Sandra L. Richmond, dean of nursing and health sciences.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the incredible need for highly trained paramedics in our communities,” said Christopher T. Boyer, director of paramedic technology programs. “We are excited to offer this scholarship opportunity to help certified EMTs continue their education and become credentialed paramedics.”

“Students graduating from the Workforce Development EMT and Wellsboro Practical Nursing programs are filling critical jobs in the health care field,” said Jason P. Zielewicz, director of workforce development at Wellsboro. “These individuals often consider the pursuit of higher credentials. The Pathways Scholarship offers them a streamlined, simple process to pursue the RN or paramedic credential while obtaining financial support.”

All of the students must complete the college’s scholarship application form, available on the scholarships page of the Penn College website, www.pct.edu/scholarships.
