‘Smiles for seniors’
The Muncy Jr/Sr. High School Middle-Level Future Business Leaders of America chapter, consisting of 7th and 8th grade students, has been hard at work this year learning and participating in community service activities with the senior high members, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year members wanted to make people smile even behind the masks, so they came up with “Smiles for Seniors.” Before Christmas, members made holiday and thank you cards for the residents and essential health care workers at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Then in early spring, junior high officers and members held a “sock” drive to collect fun and fuzzy socks for the senior citizens at the Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing Unit at the hospital. To do this, members planned a spirit week throughout the high school to lift students’ spirits, raise money, and collect new socks. The themed spirit week included a hat day, where students donated $1 or a new pair of fun socks and could wear a hat throughout the day. Teachers throughout the district participated in spirit week too and paid for an extra dress down day. All together members collected 236 pairs of socks and $175 to purchase much needed art supplies and activities for the senior citizens. In early May, three of the middle level officers: Hayley Green, Elizabeth Swart, Gabrielle Myers with their adviser, Heather Zimmerman delivered the socks and supplies to the directors of the skilled nursing unit and brought many smiles to the seniors during this difficult year. The officers submitted their project to the FBLA state office and placed 1st in the state. Now they will be presenting this project virtually at the National FBLA conference the end of June.
