Money order fraud alleged

Businesses, be on guard for fraudulent $500 money orders that may be circulating in the region by two people who were seen driving a light blue 2002 Volkswagen sedan bearing the Pennsylvania registration JZS-9698, according to city police.

The fraudulent money orders were brought to the attention of the police by a U.S. postal inspector on Wednesday.

The money orders were purchased in New York for $18 and were “being chemically altered as $500 money orders and were being illegally cashed in the Williamsport, Scranton and surrounding areas,” police said.

The couple passing the fake money orders was identified as Tatyana Mitchell, 19, a woman, and Raddee Foye, also 19, a male, police said.

Anyone who knows Mitchell and Foye’s whereabouts or are victimized by use of the money orders should call the local police department or the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455, police said.
