Police withhold identity of man killed in trench collapse

Honoring the family’s request for privacy, state police said Saturday night investigators will not release the identity of the 65-year-old man who died Friday morning in a trench collapse at his home in the 100 block of Mountain Springs Lane, just off of Route 654, in Bastress Township.

The victim was in an eight-foot ditch trying to correct a water problem when a large section of the trench suddenly collapsed on him, officials said, adding emergency responders were called to the property at 10:30 a.m.

The man was already dead when firefighters arrived on the scene, officials said. Firefighters worked for three hours to safely recover his body from the ditch.
