Fire rips through barn in Williamsport

A two-alarm blaze destroyed a small three-story barn in the 1400 block of Bloomingrove Road in Williamsport on Monday morning.

The fire was discovered about 8:15 a.m. by the owner, who lived next to the barn.

“I just got done drinking some coffee and I was tying some flies when I came out to check on my chicken coop behind the barn. The whole back side of the barn was on fire,” the owner, which did no want his name published, said.

The owner called 911.

“There wasn’t anything I could do with a hose. At that point, it was too far gone,” the owner said.

City firefighters were on the scene within minutes attacking the dense smoke and intense flames.

A second alarm brought additional manpower and equipment to the scene from South Williamsport, Old Lycoming Township at Montoursville.

There were no reports of injuries. The fire did not threaten the owner’s home.

The fire closed Bloomingrove Road north of Freedom Road for much of the morning. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

The was the city’s third two-alarm blaze in nine days.

A family of six was left homeless when their house on Rose Street was destroyed by fire on Independence Day. Two days later, a fire at an apartment house at 614 Pine St. displaced more than half a dozen people.

The SG will report more on the latest fire as information becomes available/ph
