Porch fire caused by careless discarding of smoking materials

Using a portable extinguisher, a city firefighter puts out a porch fire that broke out at the rear of 225 Washington Blvd. about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. One of the tenants, Evan Persing, at left, had most of the fire extinguished with the use of a garden hose when firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire was careless discarding of smoking materials. Another porch fire occurred Saturday at 3847 Wallis Run Road in Gamble Township about 10:40 a.m. Montoursville fire officials said the fire was discovered by a passerby, who grabbed a garden hose and had most of the fire out when firefighters arrived. Firemen made sure the fire was out before leaving the scene. The cause was under investigation. A third fire broke out in a planter on a porch at 2010 Mosser Ave. in the city about 10:10 p.m. Saturday. Again careless discard of cigarettes was the cause. The fire was quickly doused. City fire officials urge everyone smoking on a porch to discard cigarettes in a metal can with water in the can.
