Fugitive captured in Williamsport on Thursday locked up in lieu of $500,000 bail

The fugitive who tried — but failed — to elude capture by jumping off the roof of a home in the 1200 block of Cherry Street on Thursday afternoon was Shakur Smith-El, who was being sought on four different warrants, according to a city police affidavit.
Law enforcement in Harrisburg has been looking for Smith-El, 25, of 1509 Memorial Ave., since last year when a bench warrant was filed for his arrest for felony drug charges, it was stated in the court document. Smith-El was also wanted by two police departments in Lancaster County and another one in the Harrisburg area. All three departments had filed either a felony flight to avoid apprehension charge or a felony forgery warrant for his arrest, the affidavit stated.
On the afternoon of May 15, a city police officer spotted him in the 1500 block of Louisa Street and told him, “Shakur, you are not free to go.” The fugitive replied, “Who? Me?” as he took off running. The officer deployed his taser, pointing it at Smith-El, who fell to the ground, but he immediately got up and fled north out of sight, police said.
After his capture Thursday, Smith-El was first taken to police headquarters and then to UPMC Williamsport to be evaluated. Upon being discharged, Smith-El was arraigned before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on four counts each of flight to avoid apprehension and evading arrest or detention. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail.
