Milton man faces charges for allegedly burying dead infant in backyard
A 29-year-old Milton man faces misdemeanor charges of criminal conspiracy in concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse after he buried the body of a 3-day-old baby in a backyard, police allege, according to a report by Sunbury-based newspaper the Daily Item.
Donan Mardaga is jailed on $75,000 cash bail.
According to the Daily Item, police say he buried the body of the infant after discovering a teenager in the home gave birth to the child without medical assistance.
Staff at Geisinger Medical Center called Milton police and told them a 14-year-old girl being treated at the hospital said she gave birth to a child inside the home on Center Street, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Milton District Judge Mike Diehl’s office.
Milton police did not release any information on the teenage mother. Northumberland County Coroner Jim Kelley told the Daily Item an autopsy is set for Thursday in Allentown.
The complaint said Geisinger staff asked where the child was, and the teen said she put the child in a dresser drawer after the baby was having trouble breathing.
Police went to the residence, where a family member indicated the infant was in the backyard. Officers said when they went to the yard, they discovered a patch of earth that was moved and then applied for a search warrant through Diehl’s office.
Officers say they discovered the body of the female child and closed off the area to begin an investigation of the scene, the Daily Item reported.
Mardaga also faces misdemeanor charges of tampering with evidence and hindering. He was arraigned before Diehl Wednesday morning and sent to Northumberland County Jail, where he will await a preliminary hearing.
