Bingo event to raise money for local church’s roof repair

Evelyn Free and daughter Diane Stine are hosting Designer Bag Bingo in hopes to raise money for a local church’s roof.

The Episcopal Church of Our Savior, at 31 N. Loyalsock Ave., Montoursville, has a 50-year-old roof in need of replacing. The bingo event will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. The cost of roof repairs estimated at about $18,000, Stine said.

“We are concerned if we don’t replace it soon … any heavy rain, wind or snow storm will make the situation worse and it will leak,” Stine said. “Shingles are falling off on both sides of the church.”

Free and Stine have organized the Lycoming County United Way bingo for 10 years and knew people enjoyed the event and decided to host the fundraiser to help with the roof replacement, Stine said. There are seven members from the church working on the committee.

“We want to preserve our historic church, which has had a presence in Montoursville since 1870. We hope to maintain the historic structure to be able to continue to serve our town for many years to come,” said Sue Lyon, senior warden of the church and committee member.

Nicknamed “Old White Church,” the building started having congregations in 1841 through once-a-week Evening Prayers, according to a record of the church’s history. On Aug. 20, 1865, a rector started hosting services in the church.

In February 1867, Rev. Albra Wadleigh purchased two lots to begin building a church. The congregation created a charter and by-laws on March 19, 1870, and on Oct. 13, 1870, the church was consecrated. Three years later, Rev. G. F. Rosenmuller helped design and build the rectory. In 1952, a new parish hall was dedicated to Samuel Fry.

There will be a Chinese auction with five to 10 designer bags, Longaberger baskets, a Cracker Barrel rocking chair, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and refreshments. There are 30 prizes, 20 games of bingo and four specials. One special is a 50/50 game for cash, and all single winners receive a designer bag, Stine said.

Lunch will be available when the doors open at 11 a.m., and tickets are available, seating is limited on a first-serve basis. For more information call 570-323-4223 or email emfree@verizon.net.
