School board approves agreement to increase rates with Williamsport

The Loyalsock Township School Board took action on a number of items, including the approval of a memorandum of understanding with the Williamsport Area School District to provide career and technical programming for senior high students, during its meeting Wednesday night.

District Superintendent Gerald L. McLaughlin said costs per student to attend are increasing between $300 and $400.

Up to five Loyalsock students this school year will be enrolled in either welding or graphic arts programs.

A similar memorandum caused some tension recently when the South Williamsport Area School Board claimed Williamsport was holding its students “hostage” by increasing the rates. The township board did not make any negative comments about the rate increase.

In other matters, the board took action on a number of personnel items.

Ashley Hook, a 2013 graduate of Clarion University, was hired as a temporary professional to teach mathematics at a salary of $42,525.

Zachary Kibler was hired as a long-term substitute mathematics teacher. Kibler previously was a student teacher in the East Lycoming School District.

The board reappointed Patricia Womeldorf as a summer custodial employee at an hourly rate of $8.50.

School directors approved prices for breakfasts and lunches for this school year.

It was noted that reduced breakfasts will remain at 30 cents and reduced lunches at 40 cents for elementary and secondary students.

Paid breakfasts will increase 5 cents to $1.30 for both elementary and secondary students. Paid lunches will increase 5 cents to $2.40 for elementary students and 5 cents to $2.65 for secondary students.

On a related matter, it was noted that 41 percent of district students are eligible for free lunches.

The board approved an hourly rate of $140 for the McCormick Law Firm, Williamsport, to serve as legal counsel. The firm will also be paid $250 per meeting.

School directors approved the purchase of security camera equipment at a cost of $6,030.

Also at the meeting, middle school students shared with the board their experiences publishing a literary magazine.

It was announced that the board will hold a work session on July 26.
