Liberty post office renamed to honor veteran who died in Iraq

LIBERTY — Legislation has been signed into law renaming the U.S. post office in Liberty as the Staff Sgt. Ryan Scott Ostrom Post Office.

Ostrom, a native of Wellsboro, was a combat veteran killed in action Aug. 9, 2005, while serving in Iraq.

This week, President Donald Trump signed the legislation renaming the post office.

The bill was sponsored by U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, R-Cogan Station.

“Staff Sgt. Ryan Ostrom was a true American hero and deserves to be honored as such,” Marino said. “He prioritized the world around him — his country, his community and his family — all over himself,” Marino said. “His years of service and his record speak for themselves. He was a leader on his deployments and active member of the community back home. I am pleased to see this bill signed into law and look forward to the ceremony designating the post office.”

Ostrom was born Sept. 23, 1979, and attended Liberty High School.

Following graduation, he was a student at Mansfield University, pursuing a degree in education science.

Ostrom enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1997, serving with Co. B, First Battalion 109th in Williamsport.

During his enlistment, he earned a Purple Heart, Combat Information Badge, Gold Star, Armed Services Ribbon and numerous other awards.
