Grants,‘gateway’ contracts on tonight’s council agenda

City Council tonight will review a state grant to receive 80 shade trees to replace diseased and dying ones.

The grant, which is for about $8,700, is from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. It is called the Tree-vitalize program and is meant to do just that in cities, said Chelsea Myers, city planner.

Council anticipates hearing from Penn Strategies, the city consulting firm, as Jason Fitzgerald, president of the company, completes a quarterly report.

Fitzgerald is pursuing funding for flood-mitigation efforts at Grafius Run and the levee recertification. Mayor Gabriel J. Campana has suggested the latter be turned over to the Williamsport Municipal Water and Sanitary Authority to better handle the process staffwise and for funding purposes.

Larson Design Group’s contracts are up for review on the revitalization of the East Third Street/Old City Gateway project. The company is going to be looking at design and engineering of the streetscape from Basin to State streets, and the city may approve a reimbursement agreement with the state Department of Transportation.

The engineering firm also is doing a second traffic impact study specifically on the feasibility of two-way traffic on East Third Street, between Market and Mulberry streets, said William E. Nichols Jr., city finance director and general manager of River Valley Transit.
