Williamsport to authority levee transfer talks still to be had

Williamsport Municipal Water and Sanitary Authority said Wednesday it hasn’t met with the mayor or administration on the potential transfer of the levee to it.

Mayor Gabriel J. Campana said he views the transfer concept as a means of creating an authority and assessing fees to help pay for the levee recertification costs and repairs of equipment not part of the certification process, which approach $20 million.

“We only heard that through the newspaper,” an authority staff member said.

Campana said if the transfer doesn’t happen, city taxpayers may have to face real estate tax increases, or layoffs of employees might be needed.

“I also am looking at outsourcing services,” he said.

In other news, nature continues to be tricky, especially when least expected, such as the end of July, when the average amount of precipitation for the city is 4.1 inches, according to the authority water report.

For the year-to-date, the city water levels are 11 inches higher than normal, according to the report given to the authority.

The authority is providing 4.2 million gallons of fresh water per day and the two reservoirs are completely full, the report said.

The authority is reviewing which manhole covers it owns on the state Department of Transportation-led High Street repaving project.

Starting at $2.99/week.
