Flash flood takes out bridge in Sullivan County

FORKSVILLE — Water from two local creeks rose so quickly Tuesday night that residents along Millview Park Lane became stranded when an area bridge washed away.

The flooding began around 7 p.m. and calls for assistance started coming in around 7:30 p.m. from homeowners in that area, according to Jason Dickinson, 911 coordinator and deputy director of Sullivan County Emergency Management Agency.

“The water came up quicker than they could react,” Dickinson said. He added that by the time they realized what was happening, the damage already was done.

“It was a long night,” he added.

According to the National Weather Service, there were reports that as much as 4 to 6 inches of rain fell in that area within an hour to an hour and a half.

Firefighters from Forksville, Dushore, Mildred and Hillsgrove responded to the calls for help in removing the seven residents affected by the flooding. Task Force 84, a county water rescue team, also was called in, but, Dickinson said by the time they arrived on the scene, the flood waters already had begun to recede. He added the water was moving so quickly it would have been difficult to put a boat in the flooded area.

Mill and Lick creeks were responsible for the flooding. These smaller waterways empty into Little Loyalsock Creek and then into Loyalsock Creek at Forksville, Dickinson said.

The bridge, which washed away, is used only for access to the properties along Millview Park Lane. It is not known when it will be replaced, “There is no other way in,” he said.

It is unknown when the bridge will be restored or when residents will be able to return to their homes.

“They are still doing damage assessment,” Dickinson said.

Millview Park Lane is off Norton Road, which comes off Route 87 next to Millview Mountain Road.
