Hughesville School District talks flood damage

HUGHESVILLE — With the opening of school approaching, East Lycoming School District is battling water in the basement boiler room at the high school and in the playground areas at Ashkar elementary, Michael Pawlik, superintendent, said at the school board meeting Tuesday night.

Pawlik indicated water also was flowing into the wrestling/football room almost as fast as they could pump it out.

“We have pumps that run all night long just to keep up with it,” he said. “As fast as we pump it out, it seems to be coming back in.”

“Not only is water affecting inside, but also outside. If you drive by Lake Ashkar you will see the at the playground there’s basically a stream running through. The mulch is now down in Montgomery, so we will have to address all those issues at this point in time,” he added.

Because of the water issues, Pawlik indicated it would be unlikely that everything would be cleaned up by the start of school. He said some things would need to be rearranged.

In his report to the board, Pawlik proposed at its next meeting it address the issue of pay rates for substitute teachers in the district for the upcoming year. The rate now is $90 a day for the first 25 days and then $100 a day beginning with day 26. He indicated that it had not been increased for 10 years.

Pawlik proposed the board consider changing the rates to $100 and $110 a day respectively.

The board agreed to put the proposal on the agenda for their next meeting.

Goals for the year were presented to the board by Pawlik for approval. These included goals in the areas of communication, student achievement, curriculum, technology, specialized student services and special and business and facility management. The board voted to approve the goals as submitted.

In regular business, the board approved:

• The review of the current bullying/cyberbullying board policy and the final reading of policies dealing with procurement procedures, transportation and contract service personnel.

• Revisions to the 2018-19 school year.

• The resignations of Anes Begic as the advisor to the video production club and James Bower as National Honor Society advisor, both effective July 30.

• The bus driver list for 2018-19 school year.

• Shannon English for morning bus duty at Ashkar and Colleen Converse for morning bus duty at Ferrell.

• Ann Rosenbaum as part-time supervisory aide at Ashkar at a rate of $10.93, minus $0.30 during the probationary period, per hour for 2.75 hours per day.

• Deanna Freidhof as a part-time supervisory aide at Ashkar and the high school at a rate of $10.93, during the probationary period, per hour for 4.75 hours a day.

• Part-time elementary interventionists, Sarah Snedeker and Karen Waugh, at a rate of $32.42 per hour effective Aug. 20.

Members present were: Richard Michael, Donna Gavitt, Erica Hubler, Michael Mamrak, Lisa McClintock, Robert Heckrote and Kristy Creasy. Absent: Richard Bradley and Karen Berger.

The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 in the district board room, 349 Cemetery St.
