The Beach Boys attract diverse crowd at Series

Despite some scattered showers throughout the day, everyone felt like they were California surfing as The Beach Boys put on a concert after the last Little League World Series game at the complex in South Williamsport Sunday.

“It’s so awesome. We’re ready to dance and move our booties,” said Tracey Colucci, mother of Anthony Colucci, of the New England team. “My favorite song is ‘California Girls.’ “

“I have actually seen The Beach Boys in concert back in the day,” said Kelly Fretts, mother of Kody Fretts, of the New England team. “For me, that was kind of cool. When you’re in fourth grade and go to the pool, The Beach Boys are always playing in the background. Then you get to go and see them sing all those songs you know.”

She said it reminded her of fun summer nights.

“It relates back to our youth and how Little League has been so important to us since way back when we were kids,” Colucci said. She said her son probably would be embarrassed when she dances to her favorite songs.

“If my son was here right now, he would definitely dance to it. They like the music. Our team loves the music,” said Stephanie Wilkins, mother of Aiden Wilkins, of the New England team. “They’re all about the music and having fun.”

Andrea Bruno, mother of Gregory Bruno, of the Mid-Atlantic team, said she likes having the chance to see The Beach Boys perform.

“It’s pretty cool, and it’s good for all the older people that are here who grew up with them,” she said. “They have a good tune, and they get everyone in a good mood.”

She said they had been playing The Beach Boys music throughout the day before the performance, and it had been making her dance.

“It’s just awesome. The more people who come to see The Beach Boys can also see the games. I’m sure people were coming here just to see The Beach Boys,” she said. “I hope they check out some games too and have fun with it. It puts everyone in a good mood.”

George Spurr Jr., of Williamsport, said he thinks having The Beach Boys play brings in a great crowd.

“It changes the atmosphere. It’ll be fun, especially for the younger kids to listen to The Beach Boys,” he said. “I listened to them in the ’60s … As I grow older, I still listened to them ’cause I liked them.”

He said he never got to see them in concert before.

“I’m looking forward to hearing the live music,” he said. “I’ve been coming to Little League since I was a kid … not for The Beach Boys, but for the games. It’s great to have them here playing tonight as well. It’s so nice.”

Charles Vandermiller, of Virginia, said he didn’t know previously that The Beach Boys would be performing.

“I’m here because it’s free, especially for a good group like The Beach Boys,” he said. “It’s enjoyable for everybody, not just the people who buy a ticket.”

“It’s awesome that they’re doing this,” said Angelo Defillippis, of Staten Island. “It’s great for the parents. I’m sure all the parents and grandparents grew up listening to The Beach Boys. My mom always had them on in the car when I was a kid, so I grew up listening to them too.”

He said it lifted their spirits.

“Everything they sing is a pick-up, and it gets people out of their bad moods. It’s hot out, and people can get moody when it’s hot out,” he said. “With this music playing, it gets everybody happy.”
