Hughesville Borough considers combining wards

HUGHESVILLE — Forrest Lehman, director of elections for Lycoming County, asked council to consider combining the borough’s two wards into a single entity.

During the Monday night meeting, Lehman said by doing so the borough would save costs on future voting machines.

“Because the borough has two wards, they would have to double the order of voting machines,” board Secretary Gail Kocher said.

Lehman said the new machines would becoming in 2019.

Should council decide to combine the two wards, it would not affect the number of seats. “Instead of the councilman being from Ward 1 or Ward 2 the council person will be just from the borough,” said Kocher. Lehman said council could decide in 2019.

In other business, the borough received a grant for $127,000 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority, which is part of the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Kocher said the money will go to improvements in Muncy Creek to prevent the creek bed from deteoriating.

Council also approved the Lycoming County Veterans Day Parade for Nov. 10.

Kocher said Hughesville will host it this year. Every year the parade is hosted in a different borough.

The next borough meeting is at 7 p.m. Oct. 8. at 147 S. Fifth St.
