Area schools to see $175K in grant money

State Rep. Jeff Wheeland, R-Loyalsock Township, and state Rep. Garth Everett, R-Muncy, have announced safe school grant awards totalling almost $175,000 for schools in their districts.

The South Williamsport Area School District has been awarded a $60,000 safe schools grant, which will be used to fund training and compensation for the school resource officer.

“We want our students to feel safe at school so they can focus on learning the important lessons that will help them become successful adults,” Wheeland said. “This grant is an important investment in their safety and their future.”

Schools receiving grants in Everett’s district include:

• Jersey Shore Area School District, a $20,000 grant to establish and implement programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents.

• Muncy School District, a $30,000 grant for school resource officer training and compensation.

• Milton Area School District, a $24,960 grant to procure security and safety equipment and a $20,000 grant to establish and implement programs to prevent and reduce violent incidents.

• Warrior Run School District, a $39,645 grant for school police officer training and compensation.

“Educating our children is one of the most important investments we can make as a Commonwealth,” Everett said, announcing the grants “Ensuring their safety at school is equally important and these grants help to do that.”

Both legislators noted that the grants received were separate from a $60 million School Safety and Security Grant initiative created by the General Assembly earlier this year.
