Broker proposals handed to city finance committee

City Council’s finance committee has been handed four requests for proposals from insurance brokers to review and decide on within the next month.

The brokers are bidding for the job of providing service to find the best insurance agencies for liability and workers’ compensation coverage, said Councilwoman Liz Miele, committee chairwoman.

The companies listed are Henry Dunn Inc., Gallagher Inc., Brown & Brown Inc. and the Jeff Sims Agency.

Dunn is the incumbent agency providing brokerage service for the city’s liability coverage. Sims handles the workers’ compensation at this time, Mayor Gabriel J. Campana said.

The administration and council are guided by a paid consultant and attorney, Jill Nagy.

“You can go back to each person you feel is best and negotiate,” Nagy said after handing out the proposals in packets to the committee.

The insurance broker evaluation will require the committee to review what is best suited and the right price and come up with recommendations next month, according to Campana.

Recently, the issue of a requests for insurance brokerages proposals came under fire after council surmised the mayor was withholding them.

This year’s proposals were initially done in July but Campana said he had to delay their release because he felt they would expose the city to legal entanglements.

“I wanted to have the city avoid any exposure to liability,” Campana said choosing not to elaborate but rather say the administration and council are now on the same page.

The city was left woefully short of insurance after a January 2014 crash several years ago by a police officer while assisting a high-speed pursuit caused a collision that claimed the life of a city man, according to William E. Nichols Jr., city finance director.

It cost the city $500,000, he said.

The review should be done in November, according to Miele.

Starting at $2.99/week.
