City Council to look at Newberry Park ordinance

City Council’s slate tonight includes clearing up an error on an ordinance stating boundaries of a park in Newberry.

Tonight, council plans to review a request of the administration to amend an ordinance setting the boundaries of Newberry Park.

In the ordinance, two streets were not named to close the boundaries, said Councilwoman Bonnie Katz, chair of the public works committee.

“It encompassed homes by not doing that,” she said. “Our effort will delineate the park boundaries.”

The boundaries in question are on Cherry Alley and Huckleberry Street, said Joseph Gerardi, city codes administrator. “It’s a minor error, and council will be asked to amend the ordinance.”

The park is named Phillip E. Preziosi Park.

Mayor Gabriel J. Campana had the park renamed after Preziosi, an ex-mayor serving 1992-1996 and a retired city police officer.

Preziosi, a life-long resident of Newberry, remains active in the city, serving as chairman of the Redevelopment Authority and Blighted Property Review Board. He also provides advice to Campana, who considers him a close confidant understanding challenges of the office.

Council also plans to:

• Reach agreements with the city solicitor and assistant solicitor,

• Hold a public hearing on a two-bed expansion at the Willow View Personal Care Home and then review a conditional use request to accomplish the task,

• Adjust ordinances regarding peddlers and solicitors and their associated fee schedules.

• Forge agreements to provide community development funds to SPCA for spaying and neutering and Firetree Place for staff after-school programs.

City Council meets 7:30 p.m., council chambers in City Hall, 250 W. 4th St.
