Fire companies, EMS services to receive grants

he burden for funding needs has lifted just a bit for some local emergency services with the announcement of dollars coming their way.

Fire companies and EMS services in Lycoming and Union counties will receive grants from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner, according to state Rep. Garth Everett, R-Pennsdale.

“We rely on the incredible men and women of our local fire companies and EMS providers to keep our families safe,” he said. “I’m thankful to see so many of them in Lycoming and Union counties be supported by this program.”

The grants are funded through state gaming proceeds.

Hepburn Vol. Fire Co. Chief Jeff Tempesco said the funding is certainly welcome and will help reduce debt.

“We always need money to upgrade equipment,” he said.

The township’s fire company receives $12,502, while its EMS services gets $7,155.

Tempesco said the EMS is in need of a power stretcher to lift patients.

A total of $14,811 is going to Citizens Hose Co. of Jersey Shore Fire Department and another $7,155 to its EMS.

“We are doing some replacements and upgrades,” Citizens Hose Chief Jeff Fausey said.

It will include, he said, replacing hose tarp on an engine truck and buying supply lines.

Fausey said the money helps the department at a time of rising costs.

Lycoming County Director of Public Safety John Yingling agreed the money is a big help to first responders.

“The fire and EMS service program greatly assists our local fire departments and emergency medical services agencies with funds to purchase essential equipment or to assist with debt reduction,” he said. “Both career and volunteer first responders dedicate many hours to training on essential skills and response to incidents in our communities. Grant offerings assist those agencies with important public safety initiatives and help sustain the operations, especially when time for fundraising efforts may detract training and incident response.”
