Memorial playground remains closed, state grant in works

A $250,000 state grant may be available to improve a children’s playground at Memorial Park, city officials said.

The grant, known as the Greenways, Trails and Recreational Programs Grant, through the Commonwealth Financing Authority, may be headed for City Council review, according to Jason Fitzgerald, president of Penn Strategies Inc., a city economic development consulting firm.

Mayor Gabriel J. Campana recently closed the playground off to the public, having a fence installed around the perimeter.

At issue was the potential for injury and liability, he said.

The project was identified in Penn Strategies’ “Parks Plan,” which was submitted to council in 2017.

Investments in parks has a significant return for communities by increasing property values, Fitzgerald said.
