Muncy school board approves proposed budget

MUNCY — The Muncy School Board approved the 2019-20 proposed budget at a meeting Monday night that has a tax hike in it.

The proposed budget would bring a 0.74 millage increase to the local real estate tax, according to David Edkin, district business manager.

It is less than a one percent increase, showing the proposed tax will add $74 in taxes to a home valued at $100,000.

The difference is 15.5 mills to a proposed 16.72 mills, Edkin said.

The 1.25 percent earned income tax, 5 percent real estate transfer and $5 local services tax remains the same, he said.

The proposed expenditures are $18.9 million and revenues proposed are $18.5 million, which is a $352,383 budget shortfall, he said.

Dr. Craig Skaluba said a tax hike is mainly due to cost increases in health care, special education and the state Public School Employees Retirement System.

He said state legislation to make parents of cyber school children pay for tuition would save the district an estimated $300,000 annually.

The board anticipates voting on a final budget adoption at its June 24 meeting.
