High school principal approved for East Lyco
HUGHESVILLE — The East Lycoming School Board approved a new high school principal during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.
Tom Coburn replaces Ronald Lorson, who is retiring after more than 30 years of service in the district.
His retirement, effective Jan. 1, was accepted by the board at its June meeting.
Coburn will immediately begin duties as acting high school principal before taking over full-time in January.
He will earn an annual salary of $106,000.
The vote to hire Coburn was 8-0.
Voting yes were Richard Michael, Donna Gavitt, Michael Mamrak, Lisa McClintock, Kristy Creasy, Richard Bradley, Karen Berger and Robert Heckrote.
In other personnel action, the board approved the hiring of Carrie Miller as head varsity cheerleading coach for the coming school year at a stipend of $2,261.
The board accepted the following resignations:
• Geoffrey Harman, senior high marching band director/instrumental music teacher.
• Steven Budman, head varsity wrestling coach.
• Courtney Wilk, seventh grade junior high girls basketball coach.
• George Frantz, fitness center worker.
It was noted that PSSA scores for students in language arts, math and science were above the state average for all grades tested.
The tests for language arts and math are taken by students in grades three to eight and for science in grades four and eight.
The board met in executive session for personnel and legal matters following the regular meeting.
The next board meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13.
