Former city councilwoman takes oath of office again

Gerry Fausnaught was selected Thursday night in a 5-1 vote over James Gardner to fill a five-month vacancy on City Council.

“We’re in unchartered territory,” said Council President Randall J. Allison.

Councilwoman Liz Miele nominated Fausnaught while Councilman Don Noviello nominated Gardner and also voted for him to be accepted.

Councilwoman Bonnie Katz said the interviewees were impressive.

She added it was a unique opportunity to interview an experienced former councilwoman, who had been through many budget battles with the administration as well as a young man who took the initiative to intern with Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, and then apply and be interviewed by council for the open seat left by the resignation of Jonathan Williamson.

Fausnaught will sit in on the last five months of the year, which includes the budget and final-year projects.

Gardner has agreed to serve in other city capacities as he pursues a master’s degree.

Councilwoman Liz Miele added that each candidate was excellent and qualified to fill the position.

Allison reminded the public for his rationale to select Fausnaught during a time when the city needs an experienced individual, particularly with the departure of Williamson, who brought character, intellect and an ability to understand the city’s various needs as council president.

Councilman Derek Slaughter said Gardner clearly had a promising future ahead but, given the city situation, he would be voting for Fausnaught.
